How to Unlock Your Android Phone

Forgetting your Android lock screen password can be frustrating, but there are ways to unlock your phone. Unfortunately, the short answer is no; you will have to factory reset your phone if it's locked to be able to use it again. All recent versions of Android encrypt the data on your phone by default, so there is no way to recover any photos, contacts, or other data that you haven’t backed up to your Google account. They will be gone forever after the reset. However, your phone will be unlocked and you can use it again.

There are two main ways to factory reset an Android phone if you’ve forgotten the password and can’t get past the lock screen. These methods will erase all data on the phone, so make sure to regularly back up important information to your Google account.

Method 1: Using Google’s Find My Device

Google’s Find My Device allows you to erase your phone online remotely. This feature must be turned on (it is on by default).

Steps to Reset Your Phone via Find My Device:

Go to Google Find My Device: Visit the Find My Device website and sign into the Google account that is the main profile on your device. If you have more than one device, select the phone you want to erase from the top left of the screen.

Select "Erase device": Click the "Erase device" button.

Follow the instructions: Proceed with the steps to set up your phone again. Note that you will need to verify the Google account information you originally used to set up the phone to proceed with setting up the device.

Method 2: Using Android’s Recovery Mode

If you don’t have Find My Device turned on, you’ll have to use Android’s “Recovery Mode.” The steps to enter Recovery Mode vary by manufacturer. Below are instructions for some major brands:

Google Pixel Phones:

  • Charge your phone: Google advises charging your phone to at least 70% before attempting to reset it.
  • Power off the device: Hold down the Power button to turn off your device.
  • Enter Recovery Mode: Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons for 10 to 15 seconds. Use the Volume buttons to navigate to "Recovery Mode" and press the Power button to select it.
  • Access Recovery Menu: You’ll see the words "No command." Press and hold the Power button, then press the Volume up button. Release both buttons quickly.
  • Factory Reset: Use the Volume buttons to scroll to "Wipe data/factory reset" and press the Power button to select it. Confirm by selecting "Factory data reset."
  • Reboot: Once the reset is finished, you’ll see "Data wipe complete." Select "Reboot system now."

Huawei Phones:

  • Power off the device: Hold down the Power button to turn off your device.
  • Enter Recovery Mode: Press and hold the Volume up and Power buttons until your phone goes into Recovery mode. (If your phone doesn't have physical volume buttons, press the Power button five times after the phone vibrates while powering on.)
  • Factory Reset: Use the Volume buttons or touchscreen to select the option to clear data and restore factory settings.
  • Restart: Once restored, select the option to restart your device.

Motorola Phones:

  • Charge your phone: Motorola recommends charging your phone to at least 30% before attempting to reset it.
  • Power off the device: Hold down the Power button to turn off your device.
  • Enter Recovery Mode: Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons until the phone turns on. Navigate to "Recovery Mode" using the Volume buttons and select it with the Power button.
  • Factory Reset: If an Android robot with a red exclamation mark appears, press and hold the Power button, then press and release the Volume up button. Scroll to "Wipe data/factory reset" and confirm with the Power button.
  • Reboot: Select "Reboot system now."

OnePlus Phones:

  • Power off the device: Hold down the Power button to turn off your device.
  • Enter Recovery Mode: Press and hold the Volume down and Power buttons until the device vibrates and the "Android Recovery" screen appears. Release both buttons.
  • Factory Reset: Scroll to find your language using the Volume buttons and select it with the Power button. Choose "Wipe data and cache" and then "Erase everything."
  • Reboot: On the "Format success" screen, select "Reboot" or "Done."

Samsung Phones:

  • Charge your phone: Samsung recommends charging your phone to at least 25% before attempting to reset it.
  • Power down the device: Allow the phone to run out of battery if you can't power it down while it's locked. Charge it to at least 25%.
  • Enter Recovery Mode:
  • For Samsung phones without a Home button or separate Power button (e.g., Galaxy S20, Note10): Press and hold the Volume up and side buttons until you feel the device vibrate and see the Samsung logo.
  • For Samsung phones with a separate Power button (e.g., Galaxy S8, S9, S10): Press and hold the Volume up, Power, and Bixby buttons until your phone vibrates and goes into Recovery mode.
  • For Samsung phones with a physical Home button (e.g., Galaxy S6, S7): Press and hold the Volume up, Home, and Power buttons until your phone vibrates, then release the Power button.
  • Factory Reset: Use the Volume buttons to highlight 'Wipe data/factory reset.' Press the Power button to select it. Confirm by selecting "Yes" or "Factory data reset."
  • Reboot: Select "Reboot system now."

Conclusion

Resetting your Android phone if you forget the lock screen password involves erasing all data on the device, either through Google's Find My Device or Recovery Mode. Ensure you know your Google account information to set up your phone again after the reset. Regular backups to your Google account can help mitigate data loss in such situations.
